HFP Racing December News

Shannon_with_flowerDecember is always a month that challenges me with what I should be doing in my training. Usually I’m coming off an A race in November and naturally need a bit of a break from structured training but then it comes time to get the mojo back with some structured training. But what to do in December? My first race is over 6 months away…should I really be training that hard? Is so dark and cold (I know I sound like a wimp). The weather this year has been the biggest obstacle with a real winter hitting us in Ohio shortly after I returned from the family vacation in Miami. After a couple weeks of serious cold weather in December that 80 degree weather in Miami seems a season ago instead of just 4 weeks ago.

To get back to the routine I made my way back to my masters swim group this week for the first time in a month. Wow…with just one month out of the pool my fitness level was down significantly.  It was nice to hear the winter training banter among my fellow teammates at the pool…even Ross Hartley flexing his biceps and asking what I thought of his crossfit made guns (they are still tiny Ross ;).  I left feeling very inspired and ready to put together my winter training plan…even found myself on the CrossFit Future website. Might need to give that a try.

In this months newsletter check out the latest updates on the nearly sold out American Triple-T, the Helen GA Training Camp and more information on when 2014 registration opens for all HFP events.  Hopefully this will serve to motivate you too and get you through the cold dark days of winter.

So here’s to a great winter and training.

Bring it!

DECEMBER NEWS AND UPDATES
Triple T REV_FOR_embroideryThe American Triple-T continues to be on record pace with just 84 spots left as of December 10th.  All on-site lodging at Shawnee Resort & Conference Center is completely sold out with available lodging still available in Portsmouth and nearby Adams County.  The 2014 participant list is a who’s who of American Triple-T racing with past champions young and old returning to continue the tradition of very deep fields.  Among the returning past champions is Canada’s Richard Pady but this time around Richard’s not going at it alone and we’ll be racing with another TBA fast teammate.  This is gonna be fun! Some interesting facts for the 2014 American Triple-T. As of now 23% of the field is from Ohio but most impressively is nearly 10% of the field is representing Canada. There are 25+ states and 3 countries being represented with a participant from Switzerland coming from the furthest distance. Don’t miss out on the fun – REGISTER NOW.

supersale_tpcenterNow is a good time to start planning your 2014 season and we have just the deal to not only get your entire 2014 season planned out BUT also save you significant dollars in the process. On January 1 all registration opens for the entire 2014 season AND anyone registering for any HFP event through January 15th will get a discount of 25% during HFP’s annual Super Sale. Use the code “HFPSUPERSALE2014” when registering online during this time to get your discount.

Final_meal_CopperPotLooking for a spring training get-a-way to put on your schedule or a carrot to get you out the door this winter? The HFP Helen Georgia Training Camp on March 31 to April 6 may just be the ticket.  In the past this camp has been reserved for the hardcore triathlete looking for a huge training block to kickstart their season. However, this year we’ve added another level to the camp that will feature a less intense schedule but still provide a challenge and all the camaraderie that the camp is known for. This less intense camp will be led by the husband and wife team of Chuck & Deb Battaglia. Along with a reduced training schedule will be a group that will be accommodating for the “less intense” triathlete. Register between January 1-15 and use the HFP Super Sale discount code and get 25% off your camp fee.

Major-AnnouncementLast month we teased you about a major announcement coming very soon…we are very close to being able to release the details.  HFP Racing will also be making a non-race related announcement in the coming weeks too that we are very excited about that will allow us to take our events to another level through some major technology advancements. Stay tuned for more details. We love surprises 🙂

Happy Thanksgiving & November update from HFP Racing

sf_happythanksgiving3_02Last night we received our first significant snow fall in Granville. Though it’s not officially winter yet (December 21), it sure feels like it now and the snow put Jennifer and I in a good mood as the snow made the landscape a beautiful white. November of course is when we celebrate Thanksgiving and it provides a time to reflect on the blessings God has surrounded us with. Simple things like a warm cozy house are remembered on cold snowy days and healthy strong bodies when enjoying a workout BUT we certainly look at our extended multisport family as one of the biggest blessings.  We’re hoping you and your family have a very Happy Thanksgiving 2013.

Sincerely,

Shannon and Jennifer Kurek

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You…

FIT-FamilyI can’t wrap up another season without some huge thanks going out to the folks that make HFP Racing run so smooth, along with mentioning many other folks that make our job/lifestyle so much more enjoyable.  God has truly blessed us with an amazingly talented crew.

First off; the incredible HFP Racing staff & team that works so hard with so much passion each & every weekend.  The heart and soul of HFP’s race weekend customer service, registration and volunteers…my amazing wife Jennifer (aka super mom). Her attention to detail and ability to articulate race scenarios to the staff and volunteers is unrivaled. This is the lady that USAT Hall of Famer, Jim Curl, called the smartest woman he’s ever worked with during the relaunch of the U.S. Triathlon Series in 1996. I am blessed to have Jennifer as my wife and co-worker.

Staff-RaceYou can’t pull off 16 race weekends with each weekend hosting up to 8 events without a great operations team that can multi-task to the max!!  HFP operations team is one of the best with veterans like Sandy Donald, HFP’s official swim course starter (and occasional race announcer) and John Sachs, HFP’s run course coordinator (along with myself) are cool cucumbers when the heat is on & always wear their many hats with pride.

A great enhancement to our logistics team this year was Jason Sadler, HFP’s new bike course coordinator. Jason single handedly upgraded our bike courses with “OCD” attention to detail and course marking consistency.

ALL Photos 1094I can’t say enough about this next young man, Josh Dwire, who started the year off training HFP’s new timing coordinator.  Josh ended up taking on the position himself after it was obvious the new person was not going to make the grade. Josh took our timing to another level when he took over in late June with virtual live timing flowing wirelessly to our timing monitors and managing all this on some pretty “worn” timing equipment. What makes Josh so amazing is his personal story of dedication to HFP and his “other” full time job. Josh would get off at his night shift at a Tool & Die factory in Derry, PA on Friday morning each week and forgo sleep that day so he could drive to the event and adjust to the HFP work schedule. After a hard weekend of timing responsibilities he would again forgo sleep so he could make it back to the start of his work week in Derry, PA on Sunday at 11:00pm.  We’re working with Josh to hopefully get him to the Buckeye state for 2014 so he can sleep 7 nights like the rest of us 🙂

richfowlerAnd lastly, the official voice of HFP Racing…Rich Fowler. Rich is hands down the most attentive person with regards to reaching out to our racers and finding out “just a little bit more about them” and then announcing it to the world when they cross the finish line. A lot of race announcers want the attention to be on them and for them to be the focal point in the race. Rich is the exact opposite and takes great pride in making YOU the focal point at the finish line.  Traveling from his home in Findlay, Ohio to join us nearly every weekend, Rich usually arrives at the 11th hour after getting very little sleep as his priorities are his kids and their long list of activities. But Rich will be the first to tell you that HFP is also part of his extended family and he values you all very much. Read more about Rich’s story here.

There are so many more of you, like Staicey Scholtz or Karen Mueller and her family, the Washburn family, the Phillips family, Dublin Boy Scout Troop 185 and many more that play equally important roles in making HFP Racing run smooth throughout the season….too many to properly acknowledge in this blog post. Please know that we thank you and appreciate you very much.

ALL Photos 1146Someone “really” famous once said “It takes a village”…well I always thought it should be “It takes a team”. Since the inception of our company, HFP Racing has sponsored a team. These are the guys and gals that are amazing stewards of the sport and are a joy to see toeing the starting line each weekend.  Founding members, Curt Haywood and Mark Lemmon, not only provide the Team with class but are incredible personalities along with being my dear friends. These are guys that are great sounding boards when HFP is pursuing a new event or looking at new ideas.Todd-Ross-Shannon

Longtime teammates, Todd Ricketts and Ross Hartley, are a real inspiration to see how far they have come in their life and sporting careers (and how FAST they both are). I had the good fortune to travel with them to Milwaukee this year for USAT Triathlon National Championships…one of the best trips of my life. Over-40-club

Then there are the likes of Randy Lehrer, Brian Barker, Don Cain, John Menzies, Roy Youngman, Fred Strong, Michael Boone, Michael Willetts, Ed Wheeler, Jimmy Little and Ray Schoomer (just to mention a few…there are many more) who are true gentlemen and statesman for the sport of multisport. Along with these gentlemen are some amazing ladies like Deb Wheeler, Holly Fiora, Georgetta Schoomer (battled breast cancer this year and became a SURVIVOR!!), Cheryl Chaney & Deanna Kiesel that represent HFP with pride and class at every race.

A great crop of new teammates brought in some much needed new blood to the team in 2013. Guys like Craig Richardson, Neil Erst, Casey Kist, Paul Gigliotti, Dr. Thomas Carter added some great personality to the team. Thank you all for being part of Team HFP!

DeerCreeksmallThe HFP Racing season closed with a record turnout of nearly 700 participants at the September 29 Deer Creek Fall Challenge. It was quite obvious that there was a feeling of gratitude in the air for getting one more chance to race before the 2013 season ended. It was magnified by the near perfect weather conditions on race day which lead to many personal PR’s and course records in almost every race distance. With the mini distance featured for the first time at the Deer Creek Fall Challenge, standards were set by Andrew Puckett (44:15) and Jackie Pfeiffer (4(03) in the triathlon and Matt Miller (1:00:32) and Haven Lochow (1:07:36) in the duathlon. Haven is just 13 years old and a daughter of our long time athletes, Steve and Amy Lochow!

In the sprint race, course records fell with Ross Hartley (1:01:35) and Kat Briggs (1:12:34) winning the triathlon. In the sprint duathlon, Evan Bayles (1:11:48) bested the 2012 mark by just 5 seconds.

Fort Wayne’s, Zach Ruble set a new mark in the Olympic Triathlon of 2:02:26 and veteran Robyn Willams (2:23:25) set a new mark for the ladies.  In the Olympic Duathlon, Nick Baker used the days best run splits to set a course record of 2:10:44.

In the half iron triathlon, US Pro Tri member, Jim LaMastra put on a clinic and destroyed the course record by nearly 20 minutes in 4:08:53 to wrap up the weekend of course records.

In closing; in 2013 HFP Racing did a major overhaul of our company brand and company structure. We made every effort to address or upgrade the commitments we made to you back in January.  Some of those being:

  • A gold standard in customer service (check!)
  • Celebration experience throughout the race (check!)
  • Awesome post race atmosphere (check!)
  • Finisher medals at ALL races for ALL participants (check!)
  • Top notch staffing (specifically for timing, customer service and race day operations) (check!)
  • The best race results presentation online and at the event, along with making results more interactive on the website. (check!)
  • Better bike racks.(check!)

AND look forward to even more enhancements in 2014!

We hope and pray for everyone to have a great off-season and look forward to an even more exciting 2014 race season!

Sincerely,

Shannon Kurek, Founder HFP Racing

HFP Racing September News

sunrise_at_SandyHookThe HFP Racing crew started out September in New Jersey at Irongirl Sandy Hook.  What a pleasure to be part of such an awesome event at an incredible venue. Sandy Hook is a national park located on the northernmost tip of New Jersey. The narrow 6 mile peninsula is all national park property and the event is staged at the historic Fort Hancock which has a view of the New York City skyline just a quick 45 minute ferry away.  Race morning dawned to a gorgeous sunrise that only can be replicated at an East Coast ocean venue – truly spectacular. Irongirl_finishWith 1500 ladies racing and over 5000 spectators this event is quite an amazing feat to pull off at this venue.  However, all went well and the HFP Racing crew was heading back to the Buckeye State by Monday morning getting ready for the FIT Family Series season ending event at Portage Lakes State Park. After the 9 hour drive from New Jersey I was back in the car heading to Portage Lakes State Park the next morning to do a final recon visit on the courses. There was some concern over some recent chip-n-seal on a short portion (1/2mi) of the bike course. This checked out OK during my recon ride on Tuesday and should be a non-issue on race day.  We’ll need to sweep a few areas that are holding some loose gravel but the road has packed down nicely over the last week.  FIT Portage LakesI also got a chance to run the new run course that features sections of the Portage Lakes trail system. This is an awesome 5k loop course that allows for a shaded and rolling loop course for all distance (mini, sprint & olympic). The Olympic course will do 2-laps of the 5k course.  There are exposed roots that will need to be avoided and the HFP crew will be spraying each and every one with orange paint to make sure  We already have 700+ registered for this week so don’t miss out and get registered now! Online Registration Closes: September 12, 2013 – 11:59pm EST

HFP Racing July News

Shannon_COP_instructions_croppedThe voice of HFP Racing, Rich Fowler got some great passionate discussion going from his recent blog posted last week. It was such a great response Rich decided to do a follow-up to the article. So…I decided to put them both in our July News for everyone to enjoy.  Enjoy!

Men over 40 should not run triathlons
In a recent article published in Bloomberg news (seen here) a researcher presents a very well-constructed case as to why men over the age of 40 should not consider participating in the sport of triathlon. The article cites the obvious strain on an untrained body [READ MORE]

A follow-up to the above blog posting
So it seems we struck a nerve responding to the article about 40 year olds not being triathletes.  Remember Brian Lamee of Findlay who credits triathlon with saving his life too?  He kindly chimed in to add a new perspective to our little discussion:
“Ok, so after Bloomberg recently published this article it has a bunch of people in the triathlon community outraged and yes, I am one of those people.  Considering that triathlon saved my life.  First to be fair to the writer of this article before I go completely nuts, please read it so you have some context. HFP Racing June News – a little late

SK-under-finishThe 2013 season is flying by! I can’t believe it’s almost July and I’m just getting around to putting out the June Newsletter – better late than never I guess.  This weekend we’re featuring our new Mason Tri-umphiant race in Mason, Ohio with nearly 400 participants for this first year event – lots of them are first timers. A couple weeks later we’ll be at Caesar Creek State Park on July 13-14 for the third stop of the FIT Family Series with over 800 expected for one of HFP’s oldest & most popular events.

I’m super excited to update everyone on our customer service upgrade list that HFP compiled during the off-season to be put into place during the 2013 season – most of the list was based on the feedback from our customers.
-We upgraded the customer service email with a more hands on approach that has myself and Jennifer much more involved in the process (one of the reasons this newsletter is so late is the amount of time we’re working the customer service in-box).
happy-kids-finishers-The finisher medals for ALL participants have been a HUGE hit with everyone.
HFP-signs-We added more visible signage throughout the staging area including clearly marking the 3 distances (Mini, Sprint & Olympic) in unique colors.
-We now have a much larger entry/exit areas into transition that was created by our much larger transition exit/entry inflatables.
-For duathletes; no more wondering where your start line is…you now have a 10 meter wide “START” inflatable dedicated just for your race.
racks-in-use-cincy-We’re super excited to have our new bike racks for this weekends Mason Tri-umphiant Triathlon. We were able to fully test them out at Peddlefest in Cincinnati last weekend and they were a big hit. The racks work with kids, triathlon and cruiser bikes. These new racks will give EVERYONE a dedicated space in transition and are built as a one-piece unit that will eliminate the concern for racks falling over or coming apart during the race. The bike racks are rear wheel entry only.
TimingTrailerFINISHED-Our new timing/results trailer has finally arrived and we are working on getting this fully activated so we can utilize the 6 jumbo monitors and message board screen that are installed on it.  This should be fully functional by the July 13-14 FIT Family Series event at Caesar Creek State Park.

Duathlete’s opening run is out and back featuring a run across the Deer Creek dam levy. So, don’t forget your cross country legs. The bike courses are on mostly local country roads. The races finish with an out and back run that crosses the Deer Creek dam levy and heads onto a local country road. The run course is almost completely flat but does require extra effort when crossing the grass-covered levy. This race is a perfect “first race of the season” to get you ready for an exciting season of racing.

HFP Racing April News

Flag_photoIt’s hard to be too excited about HFP’s upcoming race this weekend at Miami University in light of the bombing at the Boston Marathon.  As someone that looked up to David McGillivray (Boston Marathon’s race director) for my entire career, it breaks my heart to think of the overwhelming amount of emotion he must be facing as he attempts to bring some finality to this event.  I can’t even imagine what his team is going through and can only pray for God’s hand of courage be with them all during this most challenging time.  Our deepest and sincere sympathy goes out to all the victims and their families. Please join us as we pray for them all.

TeamRWB-LogoURL_RGBSome of the members of Team Red, White & Blue that were racing at the Boston Marathon jumped in to serve as First Responders and showed tremendous courage in helping the victims of the bombing.  We just can’t thank our Veterans enough – please visit their website and support them in anyway you can. Several of the their teammates will be joining us this Saturday’s at the MUSF Triathlon and will be proudly flying the Red, White & Blue during the race.  Their team will be handing out hand held American Flags before the race. Look for them at the transition and registration areas.

With all this said, we are racing Saturday.
