SPRING HAS SPRUNG!!! – Race Season Approaching FAST.

spring-2016What a great winter we had this year in Ohio…minimal snow (bad if you own a ski resort) and plenty of mild weekends to get in some early season miles. The weather has certainly been great for those building for early season events like the American Triple-T or the Little Smokies Triathlon on May 20-22. What many folks don’t know is the American Triple-T now offers a shorter distance (70+ miles) version along with the longer distance (140+ miles) version. This challenging race will feature a 1k swim, followed by a 25 mile bike and finishing with a 6.55 mile run.

HFP Racing February News

Donkey-carott-with-sign2The American Triple-T on May 20-22 is now offering a shorter option, perfect for those wanting to step up to the 70.3 later in the year. The American Triple-T featured the wildly popular Xtreme Tri distance which features more than 140 miles of triathlons over 4 events in just 3 days. There are just 75 spots left of this distance.

The new Sprint Tri distance will offer just 75 spots and will start off with a Super Sprint Triathlon (250m swim – 6k bike – 1mi run) on Friday, then on Saturday morning participants take on the Sprint AM Triathlon featuring a 750m swim, followed by a challenging 16 mile bike and finishing with a 5k run. After a few hours of rest participants will be challenged by the Sprint PM Triathlon that starts off with a 17.5 mile bike, followed by a 750m swim and finishing with another 5k run. The weekend culminates with arguably the toughest suto olympic distance triathlon in the U.S. The race starts off with a .96k swim, followed by a super challenging 25 mile bike and finishing with a daunting 6.55mi run. Participants will have completed more than 70 miles over this long weekend.

Girls-Running

Don’t miss this great opportunity to race in one of the most unique events in triathlon. Register before February 28th at Midnight to avoid a $25.00 price increase for both distances.

If you were thinking about joining us in Helen, GA for our annual training camp…The Helen Training Camp on April 4-10 is SOLD OUT. This annual camp in the northern mountain region of Helen, Georgia limits participation to just 21 lucky participants. Campers have come from 6 states and with a helen_mountain_top_imageambitious week of training planned all should leave thoroughly tested. This camp is a great excuse to get a solid week of uninterrupted training in before the start of the season. Every year campers rave about the gorgeous terrain that presents itself in Northern Georgia each April. Follow all the motivating (and many times silly) camp highlights on HFP’s Facebook page all week.

HFP Racing October News and 2016 Schedule

Hocking-Mud-RunThe HFP Racing came to an exciting conclusion on Saturday, October 10 at the Appalachian Adventure Triathlon/Duathlon and Hocking Mud Run. Given just 28 days to pull everything together, the event went off without a hitch and organizers were very pleased with having multisport as part of their Appalachian Outdoor Adventure festival. Look for this annual event to conclude our season in 2016.

We always take time after the season to review comments/suggestions from our customers and see what we can implement for the following year.

Here some exciting and certainly some welcome upgrades and changes for the upcoming 2016 race season:

#1 – The tech t-shirt era has come and we believe based on your feedback…is now gone. Our participants are looking for the new trendy 50/50 soft blend t-shirts in gender specific sizing and cut. 50-50-tshirtLook for the new t-shirts to roll out at our first event in 2016 and even more important (to many of you) is upgraded designs. We’ve hired a seasoned designer that promises trendy and current designs for all our t-shirts for 2016.

#2 – As much as folks loved our live on-site results on our monitors, personal results email and searchable online results…we can do better. Our software has been developed to allow us to do receipt printing immediately following your finish so look for this results feature to be added in 2016. Additionally, we’ll be adding 8 – 32 inch monitors to our results trailer and lowering the screens a full 2 feet. This will address issues we encountered with our shorter and visually challenged customers. Lastly, we’ll be adding a podium and podium backdrop to the finish area for all finishers to have photos taken with their loved ones and family members

#3 – Folks loved our new time trail starts and felt it made for a much safer, participant friendly triathlon start.  However, we did find some of the divisions got a bit bottle necked and it required them to swim over slower swimmers from the previous waves. We’ll be looking at our swim times from 2015 by division and completely reevaluating which divisions are sent off and the spacing in between. TT-swim-startFor example; some divisions can nearly go back to back with no big time break (ie. Male 24 & under and Male 25-29) but then when we send off our ladies 40+ wave we need to give more time for separation before we send off the men 50+ as many of the men in this wave are swimming at a very high level.

#4 – Our software developer is building a new algorithm for the FIT Family Series points race that more fairly represents the “true” winners of each age group. Additionally, we will be adding a new HFP Racing season long points series that will reward those for competing in all or most of our races on the schedule. Most importantly participants will know immediately after the results are posted online where they stand in either points standings. This is all part of the new points algorithm our software developer is finishing up over the winter.

#5 – Team HFP Racing has partnered with Roll as our official bike shop for all Team HFP Racing members in 2016. Along with getting greatly discounted entry fees, Team HFP Racing members will receive significant discounts on bike/gear purchases and any bike service from Roll at any of their Columbus locations.  HFP Racing is hosting a Team HFP Racing FIT Kit party (for the team uniform…not your bike) at the Roll Polaris location on Saturday, October 31 from Noon to 2:00pm. Roll-logoPlease RSVP your attendance by emailing customerservice@hfpracing.com. Team HFP Racing membership is FREE and is open to anyone that enjoys multisport racing. The FIT Kit party is an opportunity to try on samples of our 2016 uniforms and meet your teammates. Once you’ve officially joined the team you will receive a link to the Team HFP Racing apparel store to order your uniforms online. The 2016 uniforms are being provided by Pactimo and will be shipped out in January. All uniforms MUST be ordered by December 1 – sorry no exceptions.

2016 Schedule Update and Changes:

The biggest news for the 2016 Ohio multisport calendar is the introduction of Ironman 70.3 Ohio to Delaware, Ohio scheduled for Sunday, August 21. This addition of Ironman 70.3 to the Ohio calendar has necessitated a move of a couple of HFP’s longstanding venues. The Great Buckeye Challenge has been moved to July 24th and the Vermilion Harbour Triathlon and Duathlon has been moved to August 27-28.

The Vermilion Harbour Triathlon and Duathlon has been moved from Linwood Park to a new venue (Sherod Park) on the west side of Vermilion. Vermillion Park 2016The new venue finally allows us to avoid the dangerous bridge crossing on Route 6 and brings back a single loop 40k bike course for the Olympic distance. Sherod Park also allows for a parking lot transition area (no more grass or trees) and free on-site parking and park entry which has allowed us to reduce the entry fees for this event by $5.00. Best of all is participants will be treated to the same great volunteer and community support that this race has been known for.

See the entire 2016 calendar here. Online registration opens for all events on January 1 @ Noon EST. Mark your calendar for HFP’s Annual Super Sale on January 1-15 to receive 25% off any HFP event on the calendar.

Fit Family Series_REVwhiteoutlineA season of racing has finally come to an end and 75 athletes were crowned 2015 FIT Family Series Champions along with another 35 athletes finishing in the runner-up and third place positions.

HFP Racing February News

coldestWow…can you believe the weather we’re getting here in the Mideast region? Unless you’re in southern Florida there is no escaping this horrible unrelenting cold weather. It certainly is forcing even the hardcore athletes inside for a boring spin on their trainer or a mind numbing treadmill session. Regardless of your attitude right now regarding this weather I think we all can agree that spring can’t get here fast enough. Need some motivation? We’re down to the final 20 or so spots for the American Triple-T at Shawnee. It always takes some time to get those final spots as participants are dropping out at about the same rate as participants are signing up. It’s a huge commitment and with this tough weather this winter it’s making it even tougher to get ready for early season events…especially as one as daunting as the American Triple-T. Grab on of the last few spots before the price increases $50.00 on March 1. Get Registered Now.

RaceResultsButton2HFP Racing is introducing some really cool technology for 2015. You may have already noticed are new online registration system which will link everything together for our new integrated timing software that will allow for much improved searchable online results formatting and even faster race day results. Along with nearly instantaneous results (refreshed every 5 seconds) at the finish line, participants divisional results will be refreshed on our 6 HD monitors every 90 seconds. We hope you’ll appreciate a more simple, user friendly, online registration process that leads to an even better “end result” after you finish. Additionally, this new integrated software will allow for immediate updating of the FIT Family Series points and also for the American Triple-T standings shortly after finishing.

helen_mountain_top_imageNext up for HFP Racing is the SOLD OUT Helen Training Camp on April 6-12 in the northern mountain region of Helen, Georgia.  With more than 20 participants from 6 states attending this years camp will be loads of fun. This camp is a great excuse to get a solid week of uninterrupted training in before the start of the season.

Mud-Run-OUGet ready to race HFP’s spring events at Ohio University (April 25) and Miami University (May 9th). These annual events give participants an opportunity to get in an early season triathlon (or duathlon) before most folks have even taken their bikes off the trainers. The Ohio University event features not only a triathlon/duathlon event but a 5k Run and a challenging Mud Run. The O’Bleness Race for a Reason annually raises nearly $100,000 for local charities. The Ohio University event is entering its 4th year and the Miami University event will celebrate year #10 in 2015. We hope to see many of you at these early season favorites.

Have a great day and keep thinking warm thoughts!

HFP Racing December News

Merry-Xmas-2014It seems every time I write a newsletter anymore I’m surprised at how quickly the year seems to be going (I must be getting old). Well…here we are getting ready for the New Year and in a couple of days the majority of folks across the globe will be waking up to open presents for Christmas 2014. I really hope you have a blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year.

This month started off tough for the Kurek household with the passing of our 14 1/2 year old labrador Zoey. She was such an amazing dog and my wife Jennifer often referred to her as her true best friend. Zoey watched over all of children while they were babies and was fiercely protective of them while they were in diapers. Later in her life she mostly looked forward to the evening walk with her labrador brother Dave. Over the last year Zoey had good days and bad days but she was always up for a walk in the nearby Denison Bio Reserve. Even the day of her passing Zoey walked the nearly 2 mile walk through the reserve with her tail held high and with a bounce in her step…just like when she was a puppy. Zoey-Girl-CloseupUnless you’re a dog owner it’s really hard to understand the emotional connection dogs have with their owners…they are truly another member of the family. It’s not the first dog in my life to pass on to doggy heaven but it was the first time that I broke down and sobbed uncontrollably with the passing of one of our dogs. I think Zoey so closely reminded me of what we’re all facing everyday…that we’re getting older but we still want to do what we really love. We all have different goals but ultimately we’re all struggling to do the same thing and that’s keeping healthy enough so we can continue to go on our version of that evening dog walk.

You’ll be missed Zoey.

HFP Racing November News

HFP Man_REVAs I’m writing this I’m preparing myself mentally for our first sub freezing temperatures scheduled for this Saturday as we welcome in November. Along with the cold (and rain) is the “fall” back in time giving us even less light at the end of our days to get in our workouts and other triathlon related activities. The last 5 years I’ve distracted myself during the month of October and part of November with my build up for MiamiMan but this year I decided my season was finished after completing the Deer Creek Fall Challenge. So…like most folks I’ve been preparing myself for the long hard off-season.

Many times I covet the folks that live in warmer more hospitable climates this time of the year BUT then I remember that the changing of seasons is a good time for our bodies (and minds) to shift into the off-season mode AND let’s be real here…if this Saturday called for a mid-70’s degree and sunny day we’d all be out for a long bike ride or run. Instead we must sit on our trainers and dream about spring…or lets take this time to reacquaint ourselves with our families (including our dogs) and let them know we’re not always this Type A exercise freak that can’t miss a workout. Let’s miss a workout or two and gain a few lbs so when the days get longer and the sun shines above we can tackle our workouts with unbridled enthusiasm.

The November Newsletter will provide you with some important updates and some news that will certainly help you with motivation during this long cold off-season.

Bring it!

Mohican Endurance Festival moving back to June
Moves to more user friendly venue

Mohican B_02 (1)The Mohican Endurance Festival was a smashing success in 2014 and we’re looking for even more excitement surrounding the 2015 event. With much larger participation numbers predicted we knew that changes needed to be made for 2015. The venue at Mohican Lodge could barely handle the 400 participants in 2014 so with a couple hundred more expected in 2015 we needed to plan for another venue.

Changes for the 2015 Mohican Endurance Festival

  • Sunday, June 28th race date (website will reflect this today or Friday)
  • Venue moved to Pleasant Hill Lake Park (across the lake)
  • Swim start/finish at Pleasant Hill Lake beach area
  • Transition area is just steps from the swim exit (eliminated 9% grade to TA 😉
  • Awesome new bike courses that will challenge all ability levels (and bring back memories of past races at Pleasant Hill Lake Park)
  • Challenging trail run within the park for all race distances

HFP Racing June News

AmericanTriple-T_poweredbySOMCSummer is now upon us and we’ve even got the weather to prove it! Finally warm pleasant days out number the cold ones. Speaking of cold weather (and water too) the 2014 American Triple-T is a wrap and this years events featured historic lows in both the water temperature (58 degrees) and air temperature (39 degrees).  However, the race would go on and the braze American Triple-T participants persevered!  Check out the recap video for some motivation to get you to the starting line for 2015.

Here are what folks are saying about the 2014 event:

Swim-Entry—————————————————
ATT-Double-Thumbs-Up“I just wanted to thank you, your organization, volunteers and fellow racers for a fantastic event.  My results were terrible, but I feel nothing but a high and appreciation for what you and the volunteers created.  Being able to indulge myself in your great events for an entire weekend was an incredible experience.  Race after race after race.  I live in Texas and turned down the Ironman-Texas race on same weekend for this.  (I have done Ironman, but not Texas.)  I clearly made the right choice.  I cannot even imagine the organization involved in creating 4 races in 3 days.  Having different bike courses in each race and creating two completely distinct olympic races in the same day had to have been difficult to implement, but your group made it seem easy.

I am already entered in the 2015 race, including lodge reservations.
I appreciate the race jersey, the finisher’s shirt and memories.  I do NOT appreciate the tortuous courses.  Here’s to 2015.”
Bill Keros

ATT-StellaI just wanted to write to say TTThank YOU! for another amazing…I MEAN “EPIC” TTT weekend! we LOVE you and your race and all the HFP Peeps! Hope you have a great season, a wonderful year and i hope you will be ready for the “Jersey crew” in 2015
….cause we are coming back and we are bringing “reinforcements!”
TTTHANKS again! Take care!
BIG LOVE!!,

“Great job putting on another great race. HFP does it up right! –David T. Payne

“A big thank you for such a wonderful event!” -Jim O’Connor

“Thanks for everything this past weekend. It was brutal but somehow the most enjoyable time I’ve had racing since probably the last time I did that race in 2003!  You do such an amazing job it is stunning to me.” -Jim LaMastra
Jim-Lamastra
—————————————————
“What a fabulous race you all hosted! We drove down from Canada to participate and were delighted that we did, we thoroughly enjoyed it! Everyone was so helpful and friendly. What a great bunch of volunteers you managed to recruit!” -Genevieve Freeman

“I just finished the Triple T this year (did 2013, also) and wanted to tell HFP what a fantastic event the race was this year.” -Alexander King

“Thank you for an awesome race this weekend. As a first time Triple T participant, it was an amazing experience and I look forward to doing it in the future.” -Erich Greoezinger

logo_deercreekLast weekends season opening FIT Family Series at Deer Creek State Park has some of the best weather in the history of the event. Great fun and great racing for two days. Full results for this event are located here.
Here are what folks are saying about this event:
—————————————————

“Who knew this crazy sport could be so much fun?  Thank you to the volunteers who were so friendly and helpful. Thank you to your organization for clearly marking everything and putting people in the right places so that I knew what to do next.” –Jill Ricker
“My compliments to the HFP team on Deer Creek. Really nice, well organized race (which is pretty much the standard for your races), but the best part was the lightening fast results from Race Penguin and the computerized results look ups with the ability to print out the individual results. I will be back next year, God willing. My friends and I truly appreciate the fact that you have corrected the one area that you guys were having problems with. And accurate timing and quick results are definitely key areas!” -David Katz

logo_maumeebayThe second stop on the FIT Family Series is the beautiful Maumee Bay State Park. This beautiful park comes equipped with a modern resort and golf course. Triathletes will be treated to a swim in a small man-made lake adjacent to Maumee Bay. Duathletes will open up with an out around the man-made lake that provides spectators excellent viewing of the entire race as it unfolds. The bike courses are loop courses on very flat country roads surrounding the park. The final runs are around the man-made lake giving participants spectacular views of Maumee Bay. logo_rfrNew for 2014 — HFP Racing will be hosting the Racing for Recovery 45 Mile & 70.3 Mile Triathlon & Duathlon during the Maumee Bay Triathlon & Duathlon. We have two fabulous events that are going to round out the month of June for us in 2014. The newly minted Mohican Endurance Festival on June 22 has received a great first year turnout and is closing in fast on the cap limit of 500 participants. The Mason Tri-umphant event closes the month out and is expected to see more than 600 participants compete in the 4 events on Sunday, June 29.

HFP Racing January News

punch-in-faceIt’s always a bit of a shock when the holidays are over and all the days of missed training and bad eating finally reach out and punch you in the face. Now it’s back to the work grind and back to getting yourself re-motivated and back on track with your training (and healthy eating). For me, my motivation is coming from taking on a coach for the first time in over 25 years of training and racing. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks! Well…at least that’s the goal.  I’m excited to be retaining the coaching services of HFP’s newest partner, TriDot Training System.  What I’m most excited about is the TriDot guarantee of getting you faster in less time training. As a committed father/husband and small business owner my days are crammed with daily mandatories. From coaching my 6th graders basketball team to assisting at my 1st graders wrestling practice, my free time is very limited and I can only get up so early and still function. So…making the most out of my training is critical to accomplishing my goals.

Need some motivation yourself? In this months newsletter you’ll find plenty of things to motivate you. Whether it’s the final days of the Annual HFP Racing Super Sale, the looming sell out for the American Triple-T, or the surprising pace of registration for the Mohican Endurance Festival, there is certainly something this month that will get you to dust off your training log and start planning your 2014 race season.

Here’s to a great 2014 race season to everyone.

Let’s start to bring it!

Triple T REV_FOR_embroideryThe American Triple-T continues to be on record pace with a projected sell out by the end of January.  All on-site lodging at Shawnee Resort & Conference Center is completely sold out with available lodging still available in Portsmouth and nearby Adams County.  The 2014 participant list is a who’s who of American Triple-T racing with past champions young and old returning to continue the tradition of very deep fields.  Among the returning past champions is Canada’s Richard Pady but this time around Richard’s not going at it alone and we’ll be racing with another TBA fast teammate.  This is gonna be fun! Some interesting facts for the 2014 American Triple-T. As of now 27.4% of the field is from Ohio but most impressively is nearly 10% of the field is representing Canada. The men represent 68.7% of the field and the ladies are coming in at 31.3% of the field. There are 25+ states and 3 countries being represented with a participant from Switzerland coming from the furthest distance. Don’t miss out on the fun – REGISTER NOW.

LittleSmokieslogo_REV2Not quite up for the American Triple-T? Then the Little Smokies Triathlon on the final day is for you. We still have 50 spots left for this challenging half iron distance triathlon.

The Shawnee area is dubbed Ohio’s Little Smokies. Looking toward the Ohio River, one can certainly see how the region acquired such a nickname. From the highest points in the forest, ridge after ridge appears to roll away toward the horizon in a gentle blue haze.

HFP Racing and Shawnee State Park and Forest invite you to Ohio’s season opening long course triathlon — The Little Smokies Triathlon. This exciting course serves as the final event of the American Triple-T Ohio event, giving you an opportunity to compete alongside Triple-T participants as they battle for top honors. Shawnee State Park is nestled in the Appalachian Hills of southern Ohio. The Little Smokies Triathlon will challenge all ability levels as you take on this challenging bike and run course.
