HFP and INFINIT Nutrition Announce 2020 Registration for American Triple-T and TOUGHMAN Ohio

Cambridge, OH — HFP Racing, Ohio’s premier event production company andINFINIT Nutrition, the original custom nutrition company are proud to announce the opening of 2020 registration for the American Triple-T and TOUGHMAN Ohio on July 1.

On May 31-June 2, 2019 the American Triple-T and TOUGHMAN Ohio inaugurated a new venue at Salt Fork State Park with a sold out field of 400 participants from 35 states and 3 countries. The events received rave reviews from veteran American Triple-T participants to first year TOUGHMAN Ohio participants.

The American Triple-T is a weekend event consisting of four different triathlon distance races spanning three days. The longstanding event has been described as “Triathlon Utopia”, providing participants an intimate setting unlike any other triathlon event. Athletes have the option to partake in the single TOUGHMAN Ohio or go all-in by doing the entire weekend of racing, ranging from a super-sprint triathlon to a half iron (70.3) distance. The American Triple-T features a SPRINT (ST) or XTREME (XT) distance options giving participants an opportunity to cover 70+ or 140+ miles over the 4 events.

The 2020 event will take place on May 29-31 at the beautiful Salt Fork State Park in Cambridge, Ohio. Participants will be treated to mild water temperature swims (74 degrees in 2019) in Salt Fork Lake, very challenging bike courses with over 5000 total feet of climbing over the weekend, and finishing with a rolling run courses on park roads within Salt Fork State Park.

“One of the main attractions to this venue is the lodging near the main staging area within walking distance for race participants,” said Race Director, Shannon Kurek. “Salt Fork Lodge and Conference Center has 55 cabins and almost 150 lodge rooms, all steps away from the transition and finish line areas. It’s only been a few weeks since Salt Fork Lodge and Conference Center has opened reservations for the 2020 race and the cabins and lodge rooms are nearly sold out!”

INFINIT will continue as the presenting sponsor along with supplying the aid stations with their natural all-in-one endurance fuel, as well as post-race recovery nutrition for the multi day event.

The epic weekend event kicks off the evening of Friday, May 28th with the Super Sprint race (250 yard swim, 3.3 mile bike and 1 mile run). Saturday is jam packed with two XT (1 mile swim, 24.85 mile bike and 6.55 mile run) and two ST (½ mile swim, 13.18 mile bike and 3.1 mile run) distance races. The final race of the weekend features for the ST race features a .62 mile swim, 27.8 mile bike and 6.55 mile AND for the XT racers, TOUGHMAN Ohio serves as the finale for the weekend on Sunday, May 31. The 70.3 distance race gives participants a chance to battle the challenging bike and run courses and compete for the top honors of being a named “Toughman.”

FIT Family Series @ Caesar Creek gets new bike course

Race officials announced today due to construction on Route 73 that a new bike course will be used for the FIT Family Series @ Caesar Creek race on July 14. The course will go north and enter Green County before rolling back south to Caesar Creek State Park. The new course features smooth roads with a slightly more challenging elevation profile than the old course. Veteran racers of the Caesar Creek venue will remember this course from 15+ years ago as one of the original bike courses used at this series event. The mini course is a simple out & back course and the sprint/olympic courses feature a lolly pop like course with the olympic course starting the second lap outside of the park.

American Triple-T 3D Course Videos Released

The American Triple-T proudly announces the release of 3D course videos for all races for the May 31 – June 2 event.

Cambridge, OH – The American Triple-T is a weekend event consisting of four different triathlon distance races spanning three days. The longstanding event has been described as “hardcore racing, the way triathlon used to be.” Athletes have the option to partake in a single race or go all-in by doing the entire weekend of racing, ranging from a super-sprint triathlon to a half iron (70.3) distance.

The event will take place at a beautiful new location this year, Salt Fork State Park in Cambridge, Ohio. Participants will be challenged with chilly swims in Salt Fork Lake, a hilly bike course with over 5000 total feet of climbing, and a unique run course through the Shadbush trail system.

The epic weekend event kicks off the evening of Friday, May 31st with the Super Sprint race (250 yard swim, 3.72 mile bike and 1 mile run). Saturday is jam packed with two extreme (1 mile swim, 24.66 mile bike and 6.55 mile run) and two sprint (½ mile swim, 12.77 mile bike and 3.1 mile run) distance races. HFP’s Arizona Training Camp – Daily Updates

March 10, 2019 – Training Camp Day 7 – FINAL DAY: What a tremendous week of camp with everyone pushing each other to their limits…something you just can’t do on your own. “Iron sharpens Iron as one man sharpens another” Prov 27:17. This is one of my favorite verses and it’s so applicable for this camp. There is just NO WAY one person can do this on their own at the level of intensity and effort everyone gave. With this being the first year for the camp to be in Arizona I limited the camp to 10 A group level campers to keep it simple and allow for first year recon work. I can’t say more about this group and what they achieved during the week. It was a great mix of personalities and it allowed for everyone to keep each other accountable and to keep track of each other when at times the group broke up on some of longer rides. On paper this camp is a huge ask for anyone let alone for most of the campers that come from a cold wintry hometown. The totals for the week were stunning: Swim – 16,000+ yards in 4 workouts, Bike – up to 410 miles and Run – 27.5+ miles. Most campers got in at least 37 hours of training with several breaking 40 hours. NICE WORK GUYS! Kurt Molter was the winner of the most bike miles (410 total) and KOM title this year. He was up front most rides and pushed us to the brink on all the climbs. Late minute camp addition, Klaus Grimm from Reno was an absolute gem and I’m so glad he convinced me to let him in the camp just two days from the start. Newbies Josh Wiseman (1st year) and Paul Gigliotti (2nd year), Justin Sanker (2nd year aka the rabbit) hung tough all week and finished strong at the Arizona Distance Classic Half Marathon today. The veterans; what can I say…these guys have been showing up for years and just laying it down, no questions asked, whatever is on the schedule they do it.

A huge thanks to Kurt Molter, Don Cain, Jaret Johnson and Nate Riggs for pushing me all week and just being tremendous human beings. I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to do the training camp each year with you guys. A MASSIVE thanks to Terry and Todd Hart for being great local tour guides on most of the bike routes. You guys are first class! Lastly, YES we’re opening the camp up next year for more campers and for Group B and Group C athletes. Mark your calendars for March 1st through March 8th in Sunny Oro Valley/Tucson Arizona.

March 9, 2019 – Training Camp Day 6: The clouds parted overnight and we awoke to a gorgeous morning…however, morning temps were only in the low 40’s as we met everyone at the Oro Valley Aquatic Center at 8:00am for the start of our 100 mile ride. It was amazing to see the young swimmers that were coming out of the pool having already completed their morning swim. We also had another Heather Jackson (and two of her training partners) sighting as she arrived at the same time as our group for their morning swim.  Everyone bundled up and were off right on schedule for the El Tour Tucson 100 mile ride. This is a training camp version of the real El Tour and we used nearly 90% of the official course. Traffic was light and the pace fairly pedestrian to keep the group together for the opening 20 or so miles along the Catalina Foothills.

March 8, 2019 – Training Camp Day 5: The clouds were hiding the sun again and the temperature was only in the 50’s with lots of wind as we made our way to the pool deck at the Oro Valley Aquatic Center. The pool was warmer than the air temps so the swim was still quite nice. A 500 yard warm up started things off then a set of 6 x 75 with 25 back on the second 25, then the third, then the first repeated twice. The main set featured a 400, 300, 200, 100 x 2 with a final 4 x 50 on a short send off to wrap things up. An easy cool down then the 45 minute drive to Three Points, AZ for the start of our 58 mile ride that featured 12 miles of climbing to the Kitt Peak Observatory. The ride to the base of the mountain was about 17 miles and had some really strong headwinds that forced our group into an Echelon to keep together.  The group exploded on the ride to the base and a few called it a day and turned around for a 32 mile final ride total. With temps in the low 60’s at the start most of the group under estimated the clothing needed once 8000 feet on the summit of Kitt Peak. The challenging 12 mile climb seemed relatively easy compared to Mt Lemmon from our Wednesday ride but we were in for a big surprise at the summit. It was just 34 degrees and the clouds were falling fast as the weather changed quickly. Most of us had light jackets and/or arm warmers and finger-less cycling gloves. As we descended many of us stopped multiple time desperately trying to warm up our hands and stretch out our shoulders which were on fire from braking so much. Thankfully Paul Gigiolotti decided to skip the opening 17 miles of Echelon riding and parked his rental at the base of the climb. This gave the early riders to the bottom of the descent a warm vehicle to thaw out in before taking on the final 17 miles to Three Points. The total ride time was 3hr 35min and covered 4311 feet of climbing at a 16.3mph average.

As always the day ends at another Tucson/Oro Valley culinary wonder…this time the cornucopia of culinary delight was at the Wildflower Tuscon where Klaus treated us to a great meal and plenty of good wine

March 7, 2019 – Training Camp Day 4: The clouds were hiding the sun (for the first time this week) as we made our way to the Oro Valley Aquatic Center for our morning swim workout. Many of us were feeling the soreness from the epic ride up Mt. Lemmon from the previous day. However, no easy days for us at the Arizona Training Camp. Today started off with a 4000 yard swim with the main set containing 11 x 50, then 2 sets of 4 x 200 and 8 x 50. Next up was a 30 minute drive to the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area for a very challenging 10 mile run. The run featured 6.5 miles on the Phone Line Trail and the remaining on the road leading back to the parking area. The run started off with a 1 mile group hike to the main trail head where some of the group decided to hike rather than run and the rest of us were off on the very challenging Phone Line Trail.  All of us agreed that this trail was one of the toughest trails we ever ran on. The trail provides many opportunities to plunge to your death or at a minimum get really torn up from Cactus and sharp rocks. Most of the group finished around the 2 hour mark with some very sore and wet feet. Kurt and HFP Man decided for a bonus ride of 25 miles after returning back to the rental home…3+ hours of training was just not enough! When in Arizona…

March 6, 2019 – Training Camp Day 3: Yet another beautiful day greeted us as we took on what is now considered the toughest day of camp…the Assault of Mt. Lemmon. Mt. Lemmon is an 8000 foot monster that gives Oro Valley and Tucson it’s magnificent backdrop views. No swim today as projected temps in the high 80’s meant an early start as everyone needed every ounce of energy to get to the summit some 30.5 miles from our starting position.  We started at the traditional gathering location (Safeway parking lot) for this very popular ride, which is 4 miles from the base of the mountain. This gives riders a chance to get their legs under them before taking on the nearly 26 miles of continuous climbing. The ride was a first for 9 of the 11 riders that started from our group. The Hart brothers are veterans of this epic climb with Terry now retired and a local resident and Todd still an Ohio native (but surely not for long). Words and the below photos don’t do justice for the stunning visuals we experienced while riding up and enjoying the speedy descent down the mountain. Not many individual rider photos today as the group splintered early and most did not want to stop and kill their much needed momentum.

The day ended with many riders getting a well deserved 80min massage at Rubs in Oro Valley. Dinner was everyone for themselves tonight and most looked forward to an early bedtime.

March 5, 2019 – Training Camp Day 2: Another beautiful morning to start the day off and things got heated up pretty quickly with a 90min swim workout at the Oro Valley Aquatic Center. After a 500 yard warm up the main set was 24 x 150 broken (On 2:30 with the 100 going on a 1:40 send off for the first 6, then dropping 5 seconds each set thereafter with the overall 150 set remaining at 2:30. So as the 100’s got faster the 50’s got more rest. 300 yard cool down then off to the bike. 4000+ yards total.

March 4, 2019 – Training Camp Day 1: Excitement was again in the air as campers woke up to an amazing sunrise. Today we take on a 60min swim at the Oro Valley Aquatic Center, followed by a 65 mile bike ride with 3500 feet of climbing then wrap the day up with a 20-30min transition run off the bike.

The pool was quite busy when we arrived at 8:45am with another triathlon camp wrapping up their workout and Oro Valley regulars starting their workouts. After a 15 minute warm up we started our main set which was a 5 x 500y broken via a ladder (25, 50, 75, 100, 100, 75, 50, 25). Air temperature at the start was in the mid 50’s and an amazing mid 60’s by the end of the workout. Swimming outside with the sun shining down upon you is the best setting for a swim workout by far. What a treat from the dull drums of our indoor facilities back home. The Oro Valley Aquatic Center is where top pro triathletes swim during their spring camps and this morning was no different with Ironman Champion Heather Jackson swimming in the lane next to our group. Lionel Sanders moved to Oro Valley this week too and we’re hoping to get a LS sighting this week.

After a quick change in the locker room we headed out for a 65 mile bike ride which ended up being 60 due to no access to a private community that was part of the scheduled route.

Riding in Oro Valley/Tucson is simply amazing…even with a crazy amount of car traffic there are super wide bike lanes along nearly every road and a bike path system that is ridiculously maintained. The route included mostly gently rolling terrain (2500 feet of climbing) with plenty of opportunities to stop to refuel and take amazing photos of the surrounding mountains. One of the cooler photos we took was as the group entered a tunnel that cut through a short section of a canyon to a private community (which is where we were forced to turn around). All of us got some significant sun with a few looking like the true rednecks were are by the end of the day 😉

Another ACCESS DENIED location at the Ritz Carlton where the entire resort was being used by big banking and media executives. They kindly asked us to leave…so no water/restroom break for us. 

After 3+ hours of ride time we returned back to the aquatic center for a short 20-30 transition run which most of us suffered on due to our legs getting used to the miles and the now upper 70’s temperature. What a great opening day of camp!

We finished the day off with an awesome dinner at the Harvest Restaurant in Oro Valley just a few miles from our rental home.

March 3, 2019 – Training Camp Arrival: Excitement was in the air as campers arrived on Sunday afternoon to our camp headquarters in Oro Valley. All the campers were coming from cold and snowy parts of the U.S. and the warm temperatures that greeted us at the Tucson airport were a great relief. While sitting on the tarmac in our plane I sent out a group text and suggested a “Bonus Ride” once everyone was unpacked and had their bikes built. Initially this was going to be about 10 miles on the bike path but we all agreed it was too nice and 6 of us keep going for a nice 25 mile loop in and around Oro Valley. The bike path system in Oro Valley/Tucson are unbelievable and are much nicer than most of the roads we ride in Ohio. Arrival day ended with a nice meal at Growler USA and much needed nights sleep as everyone was still on EST.

Healthy New Albany add kids triathlon to their event calendar

New Albany, OH – The organization that brought New Albany the New Albany Walking Classic, New Albany Farmers Market, New Albany Community Garden, New Albany Food Pantry, community programs, and Healthy New Albany Magazine has added the New Albany Kids Triathlon to their annual event calendar on Saturday, July 20th.

Healthy New Albany is a movement designed to embrace healthy living through community activities, events and personalized wellness and disease prevention.

The New Albany Kids Triathlon event begins at the Plain Township Aquatic Center and the Wexner Community Park in New Albany, Ohio. This beginner-friendly and spectator friendly kids triathlon is for kids 14 and under. There are divisions and distances for different age groups. MiamiMan – USA Triathlon Long Course Championships RACE REPORT

What a fun season of racing and training I was blessed with in 2018. It included an epic training camp in Helen, Georgia with my mates in April, a trip in early May to Virginia for a return to long course racing at MonticelloMan (my first half iron since 2013 – great event…I’ll be back next year), then on to my A-race in mid-August at the USA Triathlon Short Course National Championships in Cleveland, Ohio. In between my spring racing and my A-race I was able to get in a few local races which had me in good form going into Cleveland. Unfortunately due to strong currents on race morning the race in Cleveland was turned into a duathlon (run-bike-run). I had a good result finishing in 5th in the 45-59 age group but not getting to race a true triathlon at my A-race left me feeling a bit empty after putting in 10 hard weeks of training. After about a week of bad eating and drinking (my wife would argue this…it was bad for me) along with about a third of the training I was putting in previously I decided I wanted to get in one more big race before I called it a year. After “convincing” my wife Jennifer to let me do one more big build up and race I picked the MiamiMan in early November which served as the USA Triathlon Long Course National Championship. I told Jennifer it would make for a great “vacation” for the family. I promised a hotel away from the race venue and loads of time with the family.

The MiamiMan is a great race that I’ve raced 5 times when I was in the 40-44 age group and I’ve always found it to be a big challenge with the weather always being hot. The race is located outside of downtown Miami in a smaller remote venue at Larry & Penny Thompson Park next to the Miami Zoo. The race starts off with a challenging 2-lap 1.2 mile swim in a very small pond/lake in the park. Due to the small lake the course gets very congested and that usually means slower times. The race then heads out onto a flat and fast 56 mile bike on lightly traveled roads. The race finishes with a 2-lap 13.1 mile run that features sections inside the Miami Zoo. The run almost always features lots of sun and temperatures in the upper 80’s.

We left Ohio the Thursday before the race with temperatures in the mid-30’s and snow on its way. The family was super excited to get to warmer weather and lots of sun. With the sun going down just after 5pm in November it can get pretty hard to keep training for an A-race. I was ready to be done with the hard training and looked forward to the big test. As promised I got us an apartment no where near the race venue and close to the beach.

After a couple nice days of RnR with the family by the pool and the beach it was time to check in at the race site and get my full MoJo on for race day. It’s amazing that I traveled to a race so far from home and as soon as I parked at the venue I run into Daniel Smith from Team PR Racing in Vermilion, Ohio. Shortly after that we bumped into the Hart brothers and enjoyed some nice catching up after we checked our bikes into transition. Before leaving the race site it was announced the water temperature was well above the legal limit to allow for wetsuits. That was a little stressful news as I’ve spent the last 10 weeks training in my ROKA cheater suit for all my swim workouts to prepare me for a wetsuit swim. This would be the first time in the history of the race that the water temperature was not wetsuit legal…BUMMER. I only came with racing apparel that worked for a wetsuit legal race. I did not bring my speed suit or even a tri suit to race in. Oh well…I guess I’ll fight to put on a tri top over a wet body…that should be fun. Time to get back to the apartment and watch the Buckeyes vs Nebraska! OMG – another stressful game but at least a win. I spend the rest of the day at the pool chilling with the family.

Race day wake up call arrived very early (3:00am), as our parking pass required us to be at the race venue by 4:30am. After dragging the family out of bed and into the rental van we arrived just after 4:30am to a very busy and packed parking lot. The temperature was already 76 degrees and storms were looming. After pumping up my tires and staging my equipment in transition the rain started…then the clouds opened up and a heavy rain flooded the staging area and all my running equipment were soaked by the time I found a couple bags to cover them with. A huge mistake by many athletes before big races is making major changes to their race equipment…something I “normally” would not ever consider. However, after being trapped under the outdoor expo tent for 20 minutes while the storm passed through I made the rash decision to purchase a tri suit for the race instead of fighting my two piece HFP uniform. Not only was this a major no-no by most triathletes I was giving up the ability to represent my own company. It did fit really nice and I was convinced it would be better than fighting a two piece uni after the swim.

The storm delayed the first swim wave by about 15 minutes which was fine with everyone as the rain slowed and would eventually stop before wave #2. I was in the 4th wave which meant I was going to be swimming through a lot of slower swimmers from the earlier waves and with the swim being no wetsuits I knew the swim would be slow. I exited the water in 35:47 which was the slowest time I’ve ever swam the course in 6 race attempts. With a wetsuit I swam the course between 29 to 30 minutes from 2010 to 2013.

Out on to the bike course I had a simple plan to race by power and not pay attention to the competition around me. The plan was to average around 275 watts which should get me in around 2:15 to 2:18 and around 24.5mph to 25mph pace for the 56 miles. My legs felt awesome and I was enjoying passing the earlier age groups on this near windless day. Around mile 6 a fellow 45-49 age grouper slingshot around me and seemed to be pushing similar wattage than myself so I made the decision to sit back about 20 meters and let him make the pace until I make my final attack with 10 miles to go. This plan was working quite well until mile 30 when we caught the leader of our age group. This guy immediately jumped on his wheel and sat up next to him for a convo of which I can only assume was “lets work together” as the two then teamed up switching on and off drafting off each other. I was blown away that two nearly 50 year old dudes would make the choice to cheat so blatantly off of each other. This normally would of had me raging but I was again content to sit back in a legal position and watch my watts. At mile 40 their pace dropped significantly as they picked up another rider and now all 3 were switching off in the draft. Now this was all I could take and I pushed my watts to 415 and went left of center around these guys cursing simultaneously as I passed by them (sorry Mom). After about 3 minutes at 415 watts I moved down to a more manageable 315 watts which was my plan for the final 10 miles…I was just forced to move this plan into play with 15 miles to go.  I was enjoying my solo ride and with 5 miles to go I was caught off guard when the 3 riders came riding by me again. At this point I realized it would only take up needed energy to re-pass them so I sat back at 20 meters and followed them for the remaining miles. The crazy thing was as soon as they passed me my watts went from 315 to 275 and then eventually 250. It was all I could to not pass them again in a rage filled attack.

I managed a perfectly paced 2:18:45 bike ride (24.2 mph average) for the 56 mile course

I was super happy with my bike ride as it was the fastest I’ve ridden the MiamiMan bike ride for the full 56 miles. The 5 previous races my best time was 2:15:54 but on a 54 mile course with my slowest effort being a 2:28 ride (2009 and 2012).

After a pretty good transition, which included putting on soaking wet socks and shoes, I set off on the 13.1 mile run course. My left hammy felt tight and the sun was now in full force which made the air feel thick and stuffy. My first big mistake of the race was racing in my short course running shoes which have laces that are tied very tight. After about 3 miles @ 6:52 mile pace my feet started to go numb and I knew I was going to have some major problems if I did not get my shoes to loosen up. The solution I decided was to stop a mile 5 and remove my socks! Yep..remove my socks at mile 5 of a hot and humid 13.1 mile run. It’s amazing how poor your judgement can be when the majority of your blood is working your muscles and not your brain.

By the end of the first lap I had slowed down to a 7:33 mile pace and the morning was now approaching the mid-80’s. I was just praying my feet held out and my pace would not drop too much more during the final 6.5 miles. I ended up holding a 7:34 mile pace through mile 10 before the wheels started to come off…literally! My feet were on fire and my hip flexors were no longer willing to move my legs at a 7:34 pace. I dug deep and with 1k to go Ezra (my youngest) found me on the course and ran alongside me encouraging me to keep it going. My final run time was 1:43:24 which was a 7:53 per mile average pace…that was a really slow final 3 miles.

OMG…where is a chair. I’m so DONE! I finish 4:41:02 good enough for 3rd in the 45-49 and 16th overall

Reunited with the family and so happy for the season to be finally over (thanks Henry for staying home to take care of the animals)

In closing; I feel so blessed to be 49 years old and healthy, strong and most importantly… a well supported father, husband and triathlete. What a great experience MiamiMan was after a 5 year hiatus. I highly recommend this race to anyone wanting to finish their season at a spectacular event.

A season of racing has finally come to an end and over 75 athletes were crowned 2018 FIT Family Series Champions along with another 35 athletes finishing in the runner-up and third place positions.

All series champions please send your tri top size (sizing chart) and your shipping address before October 15 to customerservice@hfpracing.com. Series champion tri tops will be mailed out in late December or early January. Anyone that placed in the top 3 will receive a “champion”, “runner up” or “third place” medal in the mail.

We use a sophisticated algorithm that was developed by TriRegistration.com to determine the true champions from HFP’s FIT Family Series. We also produce All-Ohio Rankings which rank athletes participating in all HFP events regardless of distance.

The series points system gives the average time for each event 100 points (110 for Sprint, 120 for Olympic, and 130 for Half). Your points will be the average time (in seconds) multiplied by 100, then divided by your time (in seconds). If you are faster than the average time, then you will have more than 100 points.

This allows us to get a consistent points system that isn’t affected by the number of participants in a particular event or by the time of the overall winner, which can vary greatly depending on who shows up. Your total points is the sum of your 4 highest point totals, so you must complete 4 races to qualify.

Both the FIT Series awards and the HFP Ohio Rankings system use this method to compute the points earned at each event. From there it is different:

FIT Series Awards are grouped by race distance, thus separate series awards will be given for Mini Tri, Mini Du, Sprint Tri, Sprint Du, Olympic Tri, and so on, so you must do 4 races in the FIT series of the same distance (and in the same category) to qualify for a series award.

HFP ALL OHIO Rankings are only divided by sport (triathlon and duathlon), so all races count towards your overall ranking regardless of distance. It is separated by sport and category though. One race remains in 2018 that will count toward the ALL OHIO rankings…the Deer Creek Fall Challenge.
