CHALLENGE FAMILY ANNOUNCES THIRD U.S. EVENT TO 2014 CALENDAR

Challenge NA Logo NO DATE_REVNew Albany, Ohio – Global long-distance triathlon series Challenge Family has announced the launch of Challenge New Albany, located in New Albany, Ohio just a fifteen minute drive from Ohio’s capital city of Columbus, taking place on July 26-27.

The third U.S. event of the globally expanding Challenge Family series of events, Challenge New Albany has an entire weekend of racing for the entire family. The race weekend gets started on Saturday, July 26 with a Junior Challenge Kidz Triathlon and theChallenge Women’s Triathlon all in downtown New Albany, Ohio. The Challenge New Albany weekend culminates with Sunday’s Challenge Half and Olympic distance triathlons featuring a unique point-to-point course that starts at Alum Creek State Park and finishes in downtown New Albany.

Participants will be treated to a swim course in the calm waters of Alum Creek Lake. From there, they will cycle on a flat to sometimes rolling bike course through eastern Delaware County, Sunbury, and a tour of Licking County before finally arriving in downtown New Albany, where transition No. 2 is located.  Challenge New Albany is capped off by the half marathon run that starts in New Albany’s Market Square and meanders along a picturesque course through residential neighborhoods of stately Georgian homes surrounded by meadows, woodlands and waterways. Nearly all the run course will be on New Albany’s leisure trail with spectacular views.

New-Albany-Coffee-ShopNew Albany’s preserved wooded areas and scenic vistas, timeless Georgian architecture, abundant parkland, world-class golf and trademark white horse fences create an atmosphere of beauty and country club panache. But a closer inspection of New Albany reveals a community with a strong commitment to education, the arts, the environment, health and wellness, and technology. These community pillars work together to create a truly inspiring standard of living.

New Albany, Ohio, is a small city that thinks big and delivers. Just ten minutes from Port Columbus International Airport, and within 500 miles of half the United States and Canadian populations, New Albany is an inspiring mix of attentiveness, location and amenities.

Challenge New Albany is a result of a strategic partnership with the Midest’s premier triathlon promoter, Shannon Kurek from HFP Racing, along with the host partner of the event, Healthy New Albany.

“Healthy New Albany is pleased and honored to be selected as the host partner for the 2014 Challenge – New Albany.  As New Albany is taking steps toward becoming a national model for how a city develops and promotes a culture of health, the Challenge will serve as one example of a community event that emphasizes the impact of physical activity and sport on well-being.”, said Dr. Philip Heit, Founder Healthy New Albany

“We are extremely proud to partner with New Albany to bring another Challenge Family race to North American athletes, further building on our presence in the USA with a new long distance triathlon experience,” said Challenge Family CEO, Felix Walchshöfer. “With its commitment to quality and a healthy and active lifestyle the community of New Albany echoes Challenge Family’s values perfectly. The course is stunning and the triathlon festival nature of the event ensures total inclusiveness for everyone, from juniors, to those just starting out to accomplished athletes. I’m sure it will attract athletes and their families from far and wide, including some of the biggest names in the sport.”

Lifetime Fitness Columbus Indoor Triathlon

From our friends at Lifetime Fitness –

Lifetime-Indoor-TriWe’re already half way through January (can you believe it?) and it’s time to set your objectives for 2014. An indoor triathlon is a great way to get your season started, gives you an event to plan for, an idea of your pre-season fitness and gets you out of the house for some good competitive fun!

To that end, LifeTime Dublin’s Indoor Triathlon is set for Sunday, March the 2nd. New this year, we have FreeMotion bikes with power, cadence and heart rate consoles. No more frantic “spinfests” on the bike, you’ll  actually get credit for using resistance with these bikes!

Waves start at 7am and run every 20 minutes through 10am. We’ll have 10 waves with 10 participants per wave. The first 9 waves will be a 10 minute swim, 30 minute bike and 20 minute run. Again this year, the last wave will be a double wave with a 20 minute swim, hour bike and 40 minute run for those that want more of a challenge. This wave sold out very early last
year.

To register, link to IndoorTri.com. Make sure you link to the Dublin location’s event and pick your start wave, remember the 10am wave is a double (2 hour) wave. Pricing is $30 for members and $35 for the public.

Vermilion addresses dangerous bridge crossing

OhioMag_BestHometownVermilion, OH – Soon after the Linwood Park Triathlon & Duathlon in 2013 the race committee members from Main Street Vermilion started looking for a solution for the bridge crossing that continued to cause accidents during the cycling portion of the race.  The section of the bridge causing the issues are two very wide expansion joints that are at a very bad angle making it difficult to cover up and create a safe crossing for all cyclists. Bridge fix photos 1 However, Main Street Vermilion received approval from the Vermilion Service Director to outsource a solution. A local contractor was brought in to come up with a solution.  In the end a decision has been made to cover both 30 foot expansion joints (in the cycling lane) with a low profile steel plate that will be tack welded to the existing metal plate on the expansion joints on race morning. The metal plate will then will be covered with a high grade industrial mat that will be concrete nailed into the bridge. This solution will provide riders with a full lane in which to safely cross over the bridge.

HFP Racing would like to thank Staicey Scholtz and everyone at Main Street Vermilion for their efforts in finding the solution to this problem.

A word of caution is still warranted as this will ONLY be available on race day and anyone pre-riding the course during the year will still need to be very careful when crossing the bridge.
